Over 1,000 Drivers Cited During Safety Campaign

Virginia State Police were out in force recently, conducting another Operation Air, Land, & Speed campaign. Covering more than 800 miles of Interstate 81, police issued over 1,000 citations for various offenses, ranging from not wearing a seat belt to felony drug violations. At least one person will need a Fairfax DUI lawyer after being cited for drunk driving. Funds collected from these citations will go to pay for court fees and fund the state's Literary Fund.

Virginia DUI Lawyer on Increased Enforcement of Driving Laws

These patrols are part of an increased emphasis on driver safety and increased enforcement of driving laws, including drunk driving. The issue is so prevalent that a gubernatorial candidate is making increased drunk driving enforcement one of the centers of his campaign. This comes on the heels of the state passing a law requiring an ignition interlock for first time offenders.

As a Fairfax DUI lawyer, a first time offender can now face the following from their DUI charge:

  • One year license suspension
  • $500 minimum fine or 50 hours of community service
  • Alcohol safety education
  • Ignition interlock device

If you have been charged with driving under the influence, you need to contact a Fairfax DUI lawyer right away. Because these penalties will only get stricter, penalties for subsequent convictions will carry significant penalties. A qualified DUI attorney can help possibly keep this conviction off your record and prevent some of the of serious penalties that accompany a drunk driving conviction.
